How people keep Dhanteras
Dhanvantari, Lakshmi and Kuber puja
In the evening, in the muhurat, a diya is lit and Bhagwan Dhanvantari is worshipped for health, then Maa Lakshmi and Kuber for the home's prosperity, with Ganesh ji first, as in every puja. Many families keep the full Lakshmi puja for Diwali night and do a simpler one today.
Yama deepam
Dhanteras evening is also Yama deepam. A diya is lit for Yamraj and placed outside the main door, facing south, so that no untimely death comes to the family.
What people buy on Dhanteras
It is traditionally a good day to bring something new home: a metal utensil, silver or gold, a coin with Lakshmi Ganesh on it, or a new broom, which many families see as a form of Lakshmi. Buy what your family's custom says, and what you can afford; the day is about welcoming, not spending.
Dhanteras wishes and cards

The rest of Diwali
Lakshmi puja is on Sunday 8 November, Govardhan puja on Tuesday 10 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November. Diwali 2026: all five days and the Lakshmi puja muhurat.
