Why it matters

Tripurari Purnima: the day Bhagwan Shiva destroyed the three cities of the asura Tripurasura, which is why it is also called Tripurari Purnima.
Dev Deepawali: the gods' own Diwali, celebrated in Varanasi with diyas along all the ghats of the Ganga.
The end of Kartik: the last day of the month of lamps, when Kartik vrat, snan and sankalps are completed.

How people keep the day

Kartik snan

Bathing before sunrise in the Ganga, Yamuna or any river, or at Pushkar, is the best-known practice. At home, many add a few drops of Gangajal to the bath water.

Deep daan

In the evening, light diyas at the tulsi, the home mandir and the doorway, or float them on a river. It is the last and largest deep daan of the month.

Puja and katha

Many homes do Satyanarayan katha or a Vishnu puja, and Shiva temples are full for Tripurari Purnima. Daan of food, clothes or lamps is also kept.

Naam jap

If you kept a Kartik sankalp, take your naam one last time for the month, with an extra mala if you can. Om namah shivaya for Tripurari Purnima and om namo bhagavate vasudevaya for Vishnu are both kept today.

Closing your Kartik sankalp

Bathe before sunrise and light a diya.
Take your naam, one mala or more, and thank Bhagwan for the month, including the days you missed.
In the evening, light as many diyas as you can.
Keep one small practice going after Kartik, such as 11 naam every morning.
