Maa Lakshmi's mantra

Om shreem mahalakshmyai namah is one of the most widely chanted Lakshmi mantras. It is short enough to keep on a mala every day, and it is what many families chant after the Lakshmi puja on Diwali night. Some people chant the beej mantra om shreem on its own; count it the same way, one bead per repetition.

When people chant it

• Diwali, Lakshmi puja: Sunday 8 November 2026, on Kartik Amavasya. The puja is done in the evening; check your local panchang for the muhurat, then sit for a mala after the aarti.
• Dhanteras: Friday 6 November 2026, the start of the five days of Diwali.
• Fridays through the year, and on Sharad Purnima.
• As a sankalp through Kartik maas, the month of lamps that Diwali falls in.

How it is counted

One repetition per bead, 108 per mala. At 108 the bell rings and malas today goes up by one. Choose 11, 21, 27 or 54 above for a shorter round.
