The Mahamrityunjaya mantra
The Mahamrityunjaya mantra, addressed to Shiva as Tryambaka, the three-eyed one, comes from the Rig Veda. It is traditionally chanted for protection and well-being, especially when someone in the family is unwell or travelling, and on Mondays and in Shravan.
How it is counted
Each full repetition of the mantra is one bead. One mala is 108. Some families keep a larger anushthan over many days with a pandit; for that, follow the pandit's count and rules.
