Ram naam jap

Taking the naam of Shri Ram is one of the oldest and most widely kept forms of naam jap in Hindu homes. Some people repeat just ram or ram ram; others use the line shri ram jai ram jai jai ram. Both are counted the same way: one bead, one naam.

Many families write ram in a notebook (ram naam lekhan) as well as saying it. This counter is for the spoken or silent jap.

Questions

Should I count 'ram' or the full line?

Either. Count one bead for each repetition of whatever you are saying. If your guru or family tradition says otherwise, follow that.

How many times should I chant Ram naam?

There is no fixed number. One mala of 108 a day is a common start; some keep 11 malas, or a 40-day sankalp.

Is there an app?

Japoji is the app version, with one difference: it puts the naam in front of Instagram and YouTube, so you take 11 naam before you scroll. Android first, iPhone soon. Join the waitlist.
