What is naam jap?
Naam jap is the practice of repeating a name of Bhagwan, softly or in the mind, again and again. Many people count it on a mala: one bead for each naam, moving the beads with the thumb, until they reach the sumeru, the larger bead where the mala begins and ends. The counting keeps the mind on the naam instead of on the number.
This counter does the same thing on a screen. One tap is one naam. The beads light up gold as you go, and a bell rings when the mala is complete.
How to use this naam jap counter
- Choose whose naam you are taking: Ram, Radhe, Shiv, Hanuman ji, Maa Durga or Ganpati Bappa.
- Choose the size of the mala. 108 is a full mala. 11, 21, 27 and 54 are shorter rounds for a quick jap.
- Tap the mala once for each naam. Say it softly as you tap. On a computer, the space bar works too.
- When the mala is complete, the bell rings and malas today goes up by one. Keep going, or stop there.

Why 108 beads?
A full japa mala traditionally has 108 beads plus the sumeru, and one round is called one mala. Shorter malas of 27 or 54 beads are also common. Read more about the mala and why it has 108 beads.
How many malas a day?
There is no single rule. Many people keep a daily sankalp of one mala, or 11, or 16, often at the same time every day. In most traditions, doing it every day with attention matters more than the size of the number. How to do naam jap, step by step.
