The panchakshari mantra
Om namah shivaya is among the most widely chanted mantras of Mahadev. Without the om it has five syllables, which is why it is called the panchakshari. It is commonly chanted 108 times, one bead each, often on a rudraksha mala.
When people chant it
- On Mondays (somvar), and through the month of Shravan (sawan).
- On Mahashivratri, often through the night.
- Daily, at dawn or at sandhya, as one mala or more.

Questions
Why 108 times?
One mala has 108 beads, so 108 repetitions make one mala. Many people chant one or more malas a day.
