Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also called Prabodhini or Devotthan Ekadashi, is the day Bhagwan Vishnu is said to wake from his four-month yoga nidra. Chaturmas ends, Tulsi vivah begins, and the wedding season opens again.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026 date
It is the Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla paksha, which falls on Friday 20 November 2026 in most panchangs. Ekadashi tithi can start or end at different times by city, so some calendars list the vrat a day apart. The fast is broken (parana) the next morning, on Dwadashi, within the time your panchang gives.
Why it matters
On Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha, Vishnu goes into yoga nidra, and the four months that follow are Chaturmas, when weddings and other big beginnings are usually put off. Dev Uthani Ekadashi is the day he wakes, so homes and temples wake him with bells, shankh and songs, and auspicious work starts again.
How people keep the day
The vrat
Many keep a fast from sunrise on Ekadashi to the parana on Dwadashi. Some keep it nirjala, many take fruit and milk, and grains and rice are avoided. Keep the fast your health and your family's practice allow.
Waking the deva
In the evening, many North Indian homes draw the feet of Bhagwan in rice paste or geru near the mandir, place sugarcane, seasonal fruit and a diya, and sing to wake him, often with the line uttho dev, baitho dev. Others offer a simple Vishnu puja with tulsi leaves, a diya and aarti.
Tulsi vivah
Tulsi is married to Bhagwan Vishnu as Shaligram or as Krishna. Families decorate the tulsi plant like a bride, build a small mandap, often of sugarcane, and perform the wedding. It is done on Ekadashi in some homes and on Dwadashi or later in Kartik in others.
Naam jap
Take a mala of Vishnu's mantra, om namo bhagavate vasudevaya, after the evening puja. If you have kept a Kartik sankalp of one mala a day, add an extra mala today.
A simple plan for the day
- Morning: bathe, light a diya, and take your sankalp for the vrat.
- Through the day: keep the fast you chose, and take Vishnu's naam whenever you can.
- Evening: wake the deva or do the Vishnu puja, then one mala of 108.
- Next morning: break the fast within the parana time.
Dates and parana times are for India; check a local panchang for your city.
